So I'm going through and trying to calibrate my laser to a higher degree of accuracy. I calculated it's kerf using one of the well known methods to the 1/1000 of a mm.

The purpose of the kerf offset is to accommodate the width of the cut resulting from a laser operation. In normal operation, LightBurn will cut or fire the laser directly on the line in a given design. It makes no accommodation for laser beam width or the resulting cut width. Basically the assumption is that the laser bean is infinitely narrow.

Once you have done a Material Test to dial in you speed and power, you then need to find the correct kerf offset for that perfectly tight finger joint or dovetail. I am trying to get my finger joints tight and regardless of where I adjust the kerf off set they are always to loose. I cut a 1" square and measured the size of the cut out and the size of the blank. I came up with a .018 difference.

Kerf offset works exactly the same as the Offset tool in LightBurn, but it happens "on the fly" as the cut data is generated for your laser, so it does not alter the original design. Using outward kerf moves the laser beam outward, away from the shape, and using inward kerf moves it inward, into the shape.
